Dental Extractions in Clermont, Florida

At one point or another in most adults' lives, they will likely need to undergo a tooth extraction due to decay, infection, damage from an injury, or even overcrowding. If a young person needs braces, they may need to have an extraction to make room for the other teeth as they shift into place during orthodontic treatment. Having one's wisdom teeth removed is also a common reason why an individual may have to deal with the extraction process.

Our dental staff has the experience, skills, and knowledge to diagnose the pain or discomfort you feel in your mouth, determine the necessary course of action, and provide you with the expert treatment you need.

If you believe that you need a dental extraction, the oral health professionals at Smile 4 Me Dental are here to ensure your teeth and gums get back to the health and functionality required for overall well-being.

What You Need To Know About Dental Extractions:

What Is a Dental Extraction?

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth or teeth by an experienced dental professional to regain the oral health and well-being of a patient. Depending on the tooth's location and state, the extraction may require a more surgical procedure than other circumstances of extractions.

Having a tooth pulled is generally not a procedure that most people look forward to. Still, it may be necessary to avoid further complications from injury or infection or make room in the mouth in overcrowding cases.

What Is a Simple Dental Extraction?

There are two types of dental extractions: simple and surgical. A simple extraction is performed when the tooth can be seen in the mouth so that the dentist can pull it using an elevator to loosen the tooth and then forceps to remove it.

On the other hand, a surgical extraction is done when the tooth's placement circumstances are more complicated. If the tooth has not emerged from the gum line, a wisdom tooth is impacted, or the tooth has broken at the gum line, then a surgical procedure must be completed.

What Is the Dental Extraction Process?

When a tooth's dental extraction is necessary, our experienced dentist at Smile 4 Me Dental in Clermont, Florida, will need to do a few things to remove the affected tooth. The first step of the extraction process is to numb the tooth. A shot of anesthetic is given for the tooth, gum, and bone tissue around it. Once the area has completely numbed, the actual extraction can begin.

A tooth is generally firmly encased in its socket in the jawbone, so that socket will need to be enlarged to break the tooth free of the ligament, which holds it in the socket. Since the bone encasing the tooth's root is somewhat spongy, rocking the tooth back and forth causes the bone to compress and enough space to separate the tooth from the ligament.

Once the tooth has been removed, your dentist will need to remove any infected or pathological tissue, compress the socket with his fingers, round off any sharp edges, wash out the socket to remove tooth fragment or broken bone, and then stitch up the extraction site.

How Long Does Dental Pain Last after Extraction?

After tooth extraction, your dentist will send you home with painkillers, gauze for the blood, and an order to rest for at least 24 hours and avoid activities such as drinking from a straw, smoking, and eating hard foods. In general, recovery from a tooth extraction takes a few days, and it is best to follow your dentist's instructions to ensure a speedy and healthy recovery.

Before you leave our office, our dental staff at Smile 4 Me Dental in Clermont, Florida, will make sure that you understand the care instructions and feel comfortable following them at home. You can also always call our offices with any questions and concerns following your appointment.

How Much Is a Dental Extraction?

The cost of dental extractions depends on the length of your dental visit and tooth removal difficulty. Factors such as the tooth's location and visibility will add to the complications as well as the price.

Both surgical and straightforward extractions generally require anesthesia. Your dentist will determine the complication level of your extraction. Still, tooth extraction prices can range from $150 (non-surgical, gum-erupted) up to $600 for soft tissue and severe complications. If teeth have been impacted, this can also raise the price.

If you have dental insurance, a portion of the extraction could be covered, so you may not have to pay as much out of pocket. At Smile 4 Me Dental, we are a PPO and Fee For Service provider. We accept most PPO insurance plans and we are In-Network providers for Delta, Metlife, Aetna, Cigna, Careington, Guardian, Lincoln, SunLife, Principle, Ameritas among others. We also accept CareCredit.

Do Dental Plans Cover Wisdom Teeth Extractions?

Most dental insurance plans will cover most, if not all, of the cost for wisdom tooth extraction. Costs, again, can vary depending on the teeth' circumstances in the jawbone (impacted or not), but for the most part, a wisdom tooth extraction can range from $150 to $300 per tooth.

If you don't have insurance, it's not a problem! At Smile 4 Me Dental, we have an in-office membership plan to help you with your dental bills to still get the oral healthcare you need without breaking the bank.

Signs You Need a Dental Extraction

A few common signs that a dental extraction may be necessary to resolve the ill feelings you may be experiencing in your mouth. Some of the typical symptoms that our dental experts often see when it comes to the need for a dental extraction include:

  • Severe tooth pain
  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Swollen gums around only one or two teeth
  • Worsening pain when biting or chewing
  • Presence or history of gum disease

Certain conditions and circumstances may lead to the need for extraction, including damage, decay, infection, impacting, or overcrowding. Our dental team at Smile 4 Me Dental will determine whether or not an extraction is necessary and appropriate during your examination.

We will also make sure that you are fully informed about the process, know what symptoms and signs have led to our dentist's decision to extract your tooth or not, and understand what will be happening throughout the procedure.

Can Dental Implants Be Placed Immediately after Extraction?

If you have undergone a dental extraction and want to have the tooth or teeth replaced by dental implants, you likely want to have that process completed as soon as possible. However, tooth extraction is major oral surgery, so only a dental professional can determine how soon after the extraction, you can have dental implants placed. Most people will need to wait a minimum of 10 weeks after the extraction to have the implants done so that the extraction site can heal properly and completely. This also ensures that there is no infection or other complications.

Other individuals have been able to have implants be placed immediately after their extraction. Depending on your health status, the tooth position, and any existence of infection, you may or may not be a candidate for immediate placement. At Smile 4 Me Dental, we are happy to discuss these options with you and let you know the likelihood of having the implants done right after extraction.
